Sunday, July 31st / dimanche 31 juillet

We are unable to differentiate day from night.

The day yesterday never finished – it’s more the opposite.  It started in the previous day under a grey sky.

The overcast sky broke up around 4:00 pm and was replaced by bright sunlight.  At midnight, the sun was still well above the horizon.  The air was pure and the light divine.  At 2 am, the light was even stranger – a mix of a sunrise and sunset at the same time.

Once we left the iceberg with which we’d become very familiar, we started heading back towards Pond Inlet, where some people will be debarquing to make room for some VIPs who had been invited on board.

We passed in front of Bylot Island again, in full beauty at this hour, like a mirage, a new world, the landscape which is unveiled in front of our eyes, it’s pure, desolate, and magical. 

1 o’clock in the morning, 2 o’clock, 3 o’clock.  The passage becomes lit in full sunlight.  It’s impossible to go to bed with such a wonderful show going on.

As we approach Mitimatalik (Pond Inlet), the Coast Guard is very present.  2 other icebreakers had finished unloading some cargo.  The Des Groseillers, the sister ship of the Amundsen which is headed towards the research station in Eureka, located on the northern edge of Ellesmere Island, and the Henry Larsen.  Today is a transition day.  Some are leaving, while others (and not just any others) are coming on board for a week where the VIPs will experience research aboard the Amundsen.

Voila! The plane has landed!

La journée commence tôt ? mais comment employer cette phrase ?

Il n'y a plus de jour ni de de nuit à présent.

La journée  d'hier n'a jamais fini, c'est plutôt l'inverse.Elle avait commencée la veille dans un ciel plutôt gris.

La couche nuageuse a fini par s'estomper vers 16 h pour faire place à un franc soleil , à minuit, le soleil était encore bien au dessus de l'horizon, l'air était  pur et la lumière divine,.

A  2h ce matin,  la lumière est encore plus étrange, un peu comme un coucher et lever de soleil en même temps .

L'on a quitté cet iceberg avec lequel nous avons tant familiarisé, pour  repartir vers Pond Inlet où certains débarquent  pour laisser la place aux  personnalités qui vont être accueillies à bord.   

Il nous faut repasser devant l'ile Bylot, de tout beauté à cette heure, comme un mirage, un nouveau monde, que ce relief qui s'étale devant nos yeux, c'est pur, désolé et magique.

1h du matin, 2h du matin, 3h du matin, le paysage défile en pleine lumière , impossible d'aller rejoindre notre couchette devant un tel spectacle .....

A l'approche de Mitimatalik (Pond Inlet) , la Garde Côtière est  présente en force, 2 autres brise-glaces  viennent de finir une manoeuvre  de cargo, le Des Groseillers, sistership de l' Amundsen qui part vers la station scientifique Eureka tout au nord sur Ellesmere, et le Henry Larsen .

Journée de transition que ce dimanche, certains partent, d'autres et non des moindres vont rejoindre le navire pour une semaine particulière ou les personnalités invitées vont pouvoir partager la vie des scientifiques embarqués à bord de l'Amundsen, assister aux manips .....

Voilà l'avion qui atterit !
